Who Was To Know?

Who was to know the switch that fate would take
And the exact difference this switch would really make!
Some people's lives seem to be stuck in this "uncertain mode"
But others seem to sail through life on a more placid journey down life's road.

We can even compare a family of many kids
Each brought up together, each using the same crib,
Eating, basically, the same food and, if there's more than two -
Each wearing and re-wearing the same old "duds", as the non-affluent sometimes do.

Well, guess what! Out of seven you will very probably get
Anything from a strip dancer to a community vet.
Even an astronaut or maybe a pilot of an enormous jet.
How many parents can even guess, out of seven, what they may get?

If we could just consider others as fellow travelers here,
Each traveling in varied directions and facing different fears.
Allow each their own space and hope they'll allow you the same.
Differences we can tolerate, but we do object to any unneeded devious games.

We do live and eventually and painfully learn and with concern
How to relate to others with caring, yet capable how to discern
The appearance of crucial threat of those who would use
Your tolerance and caring against you in an uncaring form of abuse.
