The Faster You Ran

Every life feels this frustration at different time slots along the way.
Your days of life were on overload and about to short out in a big way.
The faster you ran, the behinder you got, and if you think
That's not the ultimate in lagging behind, then you're missing a link.

I believe, as is the rule, our journey speeds up as we grow up.
We take on responsibilities for people we never knew, and now our cup
Is filled to the brim and running over. We had no warning, no idea
That we would head up our own little corporation with such confidence, and no fear

The family you set in motion now becomes your daily master.
Everyone in that house is looking to you to speed things up, move faster,
Did you do this, and did you do that? Don't forget to remind me of that test
That's waiting on me to remind you along with all the rest.

Somehow you become acclimated to this race track, and you're set on automatic.
You can't go any faster, but you can't stop either, and that's emphatic.
One day it all comes to a halt, and your corporation moves away. What a jolt.
But wasn't that the whole reason for this never-ending race you've had to hold?

When the sudden halt comes, it mostly comes as a shock.
We're in the running mode, and have been the busiest parent in our block.
We gradually re-acclimate to go with the flow, but somehow we cannot believe
That we can slow down now as our little ones begin to leave.

It's a whole new world and you've got to reinvent your purpose now,
And learn how to do and undo a whole way of life. That "how"
Won't come easy or all at once, for now you've got more time to grieve,
Because you miss them so when it's time for them to leave.
