That Old Photograph

Have you ever shown a more current friend
An earlier picture when you were young. It's no use, my friend,
If you feel somewhere inside that you really need
To let them know you didn't always look like this. It's agreed

By all who have known you, lo, all these years
'Cause naturally, no matter the withered version this year
You looked more like a just born lovely flower
And you'd like others to see because how else, now, with these year's power

To ravage and devour that "just bloomed" beauty and lay you low
To grovel in dismay and that all those, now, that you know
Will not ever be aware if you do not present the proof of your "young" photograph.
When you offer evidence, the most they offer is a warm and understanding laugh.

It's better to have had and lost than never to have had at all.
(with apologies to Lord Byron)
