Just a Minute!
Boy, if we had a dollar for every time we've said that
Or, for that matter, heard anther promise us that!
And, you know what - it seldom ever was "just a minute"
And as a postponing child - we all pushed the limit.
It seems so funny, looking back to our earlier days
When we were looking more for excuses than even praise,
Anything to extend our playtime or our bedtime.
We could have played till we feel asleep, any time.
It was, to us, a lot more fun than taking a nap or even a rest.
We could beg, "Just a minute" till we put our parents to the test.
And I've heard that request put in a real reverse request
When a busy parent was postponing a child's nagging quest.
You've gotta' admit, even though it gets a real workout and always prolongs
Whatever it was you were attempting to stretch just as long
As patience held out, it surely was a handy "gadget" and still is,
And it keeps the promised one pacified without too much quiz.
It's one of life's greatest promises and time extenders
And we've all used it so long we've become quite dependent
On our "ittsy bitsy" little promise, "I'll be there in just a minute" -
And depending on the person or child - just how far we stretched the limit.
We all know and understand that that minute will extend
However far we can stretch it and we consider it no sin.
Well - it works and it has always been completely overworked
As it is now, when my minute has stretched out for six long verses.
