If You're So Smart

No doubt, that's the most overused human put-down known to man.
Sometimes it is presented as: "You think you're so darn smart." They can
Think of nothing worthwhile to say so that is their preface to cutting you down,
While thinking, "Please don't notice you're smarter than me, the first class clown."

So this insecurity lives really close to the surface of the brain.
That thought is kept as a handy response for when someone who uses their brain
May reflect that fact. Their defense is seeing competition, and they cannot refrain
From bringing the brainy one down to manageable reach - inflict pain!

Just in case you've never encountered this pathetic put-down,
Remember what I've said. Anyone with a bright brain enjoys the sound
Of another bright mind. It is a joy, not a threat. Doesn't that explain
That the put-down is born of lack, and likely there is also pain.
