I'm Only Speaking Here
I'm only speaking here to those who are on the "downhill" side.
It's a long way down and usually the road is rough and wide.
Life does this to us, also, and it never even asked our permission!
Many unexpected glitches and our productive days fade into remission.
Now, being "young in spirit" can nullify that inevitability in many ways.
We're on a level "playing field" with no preconceived "old age craze."
We just clear the cobwebs that life hung on us and set about
To utilize what we have left and choose the most productive route.
Life has run us through the mill and there're not many complications we haven't seen.
We usually found an answer to every problem and we reinvented "self esteem."
There's always the "good" and the "bad" in every age group, but age can add a dimension
That speaks wisdom and patience with an ulterior motive of good intention.
To those standing on the crest of the hill, looking "way down" take this word
With you as you descend, and hang on to every word you ever heard.
You may have less strength now but you likely will have more spare time.
You have every lesson you ever learned tucked in your travel bag - it's time
To sow your wisdom by the road on your way down the hill.
It'll be your final legacy for all who follow you, later, down that hill.
Anyone who is past seventy, knows full well - in the youthful world, back up the hill,
You're not considered wise as much as you're classified as "nil"
Because they won't know, for about twenty years, what the decline is all about!
No one will hear you now but leave the words for those who may, no doubt,
Find your wisdom growing by the valley road - as a lovely flower
To offer love and consolation as they follow us to their later hour.
