How Did We Arrive at Today?

When our days on earth are closing down, we sometimes take inventory
To review and evaluate how we used our allotted days as we lived our story.
We likely accumulated some mental notes as we wrote day by long day
Each current problem and our improvised solution to convey.

We all do it one day at a time. Problems add up, solutions add up,
And each day we make the best decisions we can figure. Some days, our cup
Truly runneth over. On any one day we take what we've got and do what we can,
And fifty years or more on down that road we review our solutions and our plans.

How did we do? Most have a real mixture of "stupid" and "wise."
Every solution was based on what we had to work with, and some where no prize.
As we learn by experience, we revaluate and try to keep an update,
So today where do I stand? I'm back at home plate

Just waiting for another inning. I may never hit a home run,
But I'm still hanging in there. Mostly I'm assessing the damage done.
And put the story in some semblance of order to attempt to make sense
Of why I came, who I am, why I chose this time and series of events.

Whatever the final assessment that eventually culminates,
I'm just like everyone else, we live it all, one day at a time. That's fate.
As life winds down, those thousands of days seem so few,
But as they passed in slow, slow motion, I thought they'd never end. Didn't you?

Maybe the total summation is in direct proportion to how we played the game.
When you review the picture your life painted, did you sign your name
To leave, with love and pride, for those who follow after you?
For your influence will live on forever, long after all have forgotten you.
