He Sold His Soul

Have you ever heard some other person say
Words like these that meant in some dire detrimental way -
Someone had sold out completely every principle they ever had
And, somehow, you felt this victim must really be sad.

Even in my youthful ignorance, I was real concerned for this unfortunate man
Who had sold his soul and about his most current plan -
For a man without a soul could not possibly live at all.
My concern exceeded whatever knowledge I could recall.

Also, I kept asking, "Why on earth would anyone sell their soul?"
Even in my childish mind it made zero sense to me as it was told.
And even now, in later years, I must question even deeper,
"Why?" This had to be the epitome of the grimmest act of the final reaper.
