At The End Of That Rainbow

That intriguing story was ever heard and ever told
And especially the children always felt they'd find that pot of gold.
Childish faith is such a wonderful thing to behold,
Why not express your faith by exploring and digging that hole.

As I beheld one day a breathtakingly beautiful rainbow
That stretched across the heavens, wouldn't you know -
I was sure it ended in a hillside near my home.
I was laboriously digging and digging. Thought I was alone,

But a neighbor lady was watching in amazement as I dug.
She probably never even saw the rainbow, just the sweat on my mug.
When I, in my childish faith, was overjoyed to explain,
She laughed till she cried and strolled on leaving me to nurse my pain.

How much joy can it bring to shatter childish faith with a bolt of adult reality? Of course that was only the beginning! I learned about reality many times over, but I never lost my faith nor my desire to search. As for the lady who laughed at me, I just wonder if she ever found her pot of gold... or did she ever even look?
