And We Slept...

Following a hard day's work with our ever striving
To make life a little better and maybe more worth living,
We would find sweet release as we say down our heads to rest,
Secure in the fact we had labored hard and done our very best.

Each night we dreamed unfinished dreams of better days to come,
With only faith and not a shred of hope in reality for those days to come.
The joy of life was just being glad we were still alive
One day to the next, and that we had sustenance to survive.

The bare necessities like food, clothing and shelter were cause for rejoicing,
Even though that was sparse. Our lack required no voicing.
At the close of another day we felt lucky to have survived,
And we slept in resigned bliss to rest for another day of our lives.
